The Ottawa & District Hockey Association, in conjunction with
Hockey Canada, has taken important and necessary steps towards the
prevention of abuse and harassment within amateur hockey. Included
in this process is the educational program Speak Out, designed to
impact on the attitudes, skills and knowledge of any front-line
volunteer which will result in the safe, sportsmanlike environment
for all of our members, especially the players.
As part of our on-going development of both an intervention and
prevention plan in response to abuse and harassment, e have been
pro-actively delivering this workshop throughout our branch over
the past 5 years. This program is a progressive and vital component
in identifying abuse and harassment within the sport world, and
ultimately defining the elements of safety.
Effective October 18th, 2004, any registered ODMHA team official,
and any registered Junior team official who attends the bench is
required to complete Speak Out Training. In addition, any other
non-registered volunteer, if determined to do so by
their association/league, complete the Speak Out Training. Note:
high school students, with written authorization from their association/league
are exempt from any fees, and will receive a letter of attendance,
enabling them to apply the 4 hours towards their required community
service hours. Due to sensitive workshop content, it is recommended
that students be at least 16 yrs old.
For implementation purposes, the original 30 day time frame has
been extended to December 31st, 2004 in order to allow ample time
for new participants to complete the training.
Also, beginning in the 0405 season, Hockey Canadas
abuse and harassment prevention module has been incorporated into
our Officials Training Program, offering our on-ice officials
valuable resources in identification and prevention.
The participant fee remains at $10.00 (note, associations may charge
more to compensate for facility costs), and the host association
is asked to arrange the facility and audiovisual requirements.
Should you have any questions, feedback or if your association
is interested in booking a workshop please call (613) 732-5928 or
email odharsm@sympatico.ca
If you wish to register for an upcoming clinic, please review the
speak out clinics section.
